They don’t call Miami the Sixth Borough for nothing. CNN has taken note of the influx of New York restaurants cropping up in South Florida, highlighting NYC-MIA locations of top places like Lure Fishbar, Upland, Lucali, Scarpetta, Nobu, Quality Meats — and the list goes on.
CNN spoke with INDULGE Editor in Chief Evan S. Benn for his take on the trend:
“I think it’s a nod to the international appeal of both cities, and the recognition that Miami, like New York, is really hungry for great restaurants,” he said.
Benn noted that restaurant work can’t be phoned in; New York operators have to be present to ensure their Magic City outposts are running smoothly.
“Even the best restaurants fail if their owners are asleep at the wheel,” Benn told CNN. “It’s no coincidence that Lure Fishbar chef/partner Josh Capon is down here from New York all the time, and that Upland chef/partner Justin Smillie and owner Stephen Starr are constant presences in Miami. Or that both restaurants are always packed with happy eaters.”
