‘Cuban Food Stories’ gives a glimpse into the regional cuisines of Cuba

North of Havana, nobody knows ropa vieja and maduros like Miami does. But in the documentary film Cuban Food Stories, you’ll discover the little-known regional cuisines of the island, like Toa River shrimp that are beloved by locals. The movie, made by Cuban American filmmaker Asori Soto with help from producers of Jiro Dreams of Sushi, is one of 120 pictures to be screened during the Miami Film Festival.

In its 35 years, Miami Dade College’s festival has become the world’s preeminent place to see Ibero-American cinema – or movies from Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries. Films will play at six venues across town March 9-18. General admission is $13, but check the festival’s website for $100 special events with selfie-worthy movie stars. miamifilmfestival.com.
