From the Editor: INDULGE focuses holiday issue on those who give back

Niños del Sol is one of the many nonprofits highlighted in the pages of INDULGE's 2018 Holiday Gifts & Givers issue.

It’s easy to see what makes INDULGE a luxury lifestyle magazine: glossy pages full of fancy things, beautiful people and multimillion-dollar homes.

Around this time of year, that sense of affluence for some can feel amplified. There are galas to attend, presents to buy and vacations to take. Yet for others, the holidays carry acute feelings of financial insecurity, personal loss and countless other adversities.

A subtle change I made when I started editing INDULGE was to tweak the theme of this edition, from the Holiday Issue to Holiday Gifts & Givers. I wanted to recognize not only the material objects we exchange and the celebrations we have in November and December, but also the people and organizations in our community who give back and help others, all year round.

Our Movers department always contains profiles of impressive people who are the pillars of Miami. This issue’s lot is among the most magnanimous and monumental that I can recall featuring in our pages.

You may recognize Katie Phang from her frequent appearances on MSNBC as a legal analyst. But you probably don’t know about all she does behind the scenes, like being the only female partner in her Miami law firm and advocating for the next generation of female attorneys. Another great Miamian in the spotlight this month is David Lawrence, a former Miami Herald publisher and current chair of the The Children’s Movement of Florida, who has documented his life and career in a new memoir.

Of course, gift-giving is inextricably tied to the holidays, so we compiled our best-ever guide to help you find the perfect presents for everyone in your life. We asked local experts in various fields to tell us what they’d like to give and get this year, and their suggestions run the gamut from Hamilton tickets to a dog-toy subscription service. Our cover star, athlete-turned-businesswoman Julian Reynolds, chimed in with six great gift ideas for fellow fashionistas, including a pair of Gucci loafers that channel the current sneaker craze.

I like to think that INDULGE mirrors the best of Miami: at times flashy and glamorous, but also full of compassion and conscientiousness. Wherever you find yourself this holiday season, I hope you are able to give as much as you receive.
