Every year, watch enthusiasts from all over the world descend on Baselworld in Switzerland, the world’s most important watch show with more than 600 exhibitors. The show is an obligatory fixture in the watch industry, filled with anticipation about the new watch models. Baselworld 2018 included debut watches from heavyweights like Rolex and Patek Philippe, as well as new launches from smaller watchmakers.

The overarching trend at Baselworld 2018 was “to look back to move forward.” The major brands unveiled watches inspired by vintage pieces but made of high-tech materials. Call it Heritage over Vintage. In addition, we saw the continuation of slightly reduced case sizes: The new average is now between 39 and 42 mm. And of course there were some “halo timepieces” – extreme flagship models to show the technological capabilities of the brands.

Have you ever wondered why Switzerland is the traditional center of watchmaking? The answer: During winter, when the people in the Swiss mountain valleys were snowed in, farmers and other workers occupied themselves by making watch components. They simply had nothing else to do.

All Rolex, Tudor and Patek Philippe models available at Kirk Jewelers in downtown Miami; Tag Heuer available at Westime in Brickell City Centre; Bulgari available at Bulgari at Bal Harbour Shops.
